Nobody here seems to recognize that the voting demographics in districts like Beedenbenders' still sit heavily Republican. I personally believe the absence of a vocal Steve Levy support, and a smaller GOTV effort in Beedenbender's district lead directly to the still contested Muratore win.

Last night's results truly shine a light on how extraordinary Beedenbender's win was in 2007. In hindsight, everything had to break exactly right for Brian to win 2 years ago in such a Republican dominated district.

As important as the above factors is the lack of controversy and the positive campaign ran by Tom Muratore. Tom showed a genuine outward respect for Brian that I believe endeared Tom to the voting electorate. In other words, there was no real reason for the voting electorate to not vote for Tom. He clearly showed that he is a good guy who would not get mixed up in mudslinging, with a paternal way about his message that in these times was enough to assure a confidence that put him over the top.

I was incorrect in thinking Brian's work ethic, community roots, and incumbancy would be enough to win reelection. Clearly, I underestimated the leanings of the LD, and quite frankly, should have known better. This race was about two good people running good campaigns. It was a shame that someone had to lose. But, in hindsight, it should have been a no-brainer.

For the record, last night's results do not reflect the slow evolution of the demographic change not only in Suffolk, but, in many heavily Republican districts throughout the nation. Young people, the future of politics, are disgusted with the Republican message and past practices (see the Bush years). We will not see this trend actualized into results for several years, because young people, for the most part, do not vote. When these young folks graduate to a voting block, I believe the Republican Party, with it's present message, will become irrevelant to the issues of future politics. Take the success of last night for what it was, a spike of senior votes that will eventually be replaced by future generation electorate of left leaning, economically disadvantaged folks (our future "middle class").

You can howl with glee all you want today, but the fact remains that Suffolk County is still in solid, democratic control.

So, what did you really win yesterday, other than the Beedenbender seat-which you should have never lost 2 years ago, given the built in demographic advantage?

Yes, you took back the Islip Town Board. No offense, but you still have a Democratic Supervisor. Now, Nolan has a built in excuse to blame any future failures.

Brookhaven stayed the same. This would be, by every possible analysis, exactly the opposite message that you are crowing on this site. You can live in fantasy land if you wish, but in the real world, Democrats still maintained their townwide office stranglehold.

You may salivate at the possibility of heaping very nasty attacks at Brian Foley. You should be advised in advance that Mr. Foley is well respected, and beloved in the community as a genuine, good man. If you decide to get as disgusting as you have in the past, I can guarentee you will lose the Foley seat again. When people see a good man getting attacked, they generally rise up in defiance.

So have at it, "GOP Brethren". But remember, if you blow this with the usual personally irresponsible and baseless hate, you have only yourselves to blame. Just ask Nick Caracappa.
