Smithtown:
Pat Vecchio (Inc.; R) def. Pat Biancanello (D) - Town Supervisor
Pat Biancanello said recently that she should start being referred to as Madam Supervisor-Elect. She is now Madam Former-Councilwoman. As I mentioned in my predictions, you have to take the championship away from the champ, and she didn't even make a showing.
Kevin Malloy (R) & Tom McCarthy (Inc.; R) def. Mark Mancini (D) & Craig Tortora (D) - Town Council
When Pat Biancanello vacated her seat for her unsuccessful run at Supervisor, she allowed the chance for Republicans to take control of the Council, and take control is what they did. What might be surprising about this race is that Kevin Malloy took top vote. A Republican controlled executive and Legislature in Smithtown is great for the town. I expect the town to keep taxes low, and to work on revitalizing downtown.
Glen Jorgensen (R) def. Dan Ryan (Inc.; D) - Highway Superintendent
In a surprising result, Glen Jorgensen destroyed the Democratic incumbent Dan Ryan. Glen has been on the streets, working with his hands for 32 years and he knows what works and what doesn't. Glen has tireless energy and he will bring this to his job as new Superintendent. Glen should be proud of himself.
Islip:
Trish Bergen (R) & Steve Flotteron (R) def. Jim Morgo (D) & Chris Bodkin (D) - Town Board
This is a huge surprise. Going into this, I thought that at least one Democrat would make it in, and Trish Bergen being the one Republican making it in. This is a direct result of people being tired of the lack of progress Democrats have brought on all levels of government. These two will definitely hold Nolan's feet to the fire and Nolan better clean his act up and do more or he'll be out next time as well.
County Legislature:
Tom Muratore (R) def. Brian Beedenbender (Inc.; D) - 4th Legislative District
This is a race that I picked. The people came out and voted more against a Democrat incumbent who has done nothing, than for the Republican challenger. Tom is going to be one hell of a Legislator. Brian is a good man, and lucky for him, he is still young and can and will find something to do and he will be successful in whatever it is he does.
Jack Eddington (Inc.; WF) def. L. Dean Murray (R) - 7th Legislative District
This race was close and Eddington pulled it out even though I didn't think he would. Hopefully Eddington can do more for his constituents than fight Steve Levy. He has to work for his constituents, not pander to the Police Union.
Tom Cilmi (R) def. Pat Nolan (D) & Tom Molnar (C) - 10th Legislative District
I am not surprised with who won, but I am surprised by how much he won by. I am very pleased with this result. The better man won. Tom is going to be an outstanding Legislator. Tom winning, coupled with Trish Bergin and Steve Flotteron winning their Islip Board seats, shows that the Islip GOP is back. Phil Nolan better watch out.
Tom Barraga (Inc.; R) def. James Alcus (D) - 11th Legislative District
I have no idea what Politics64 was talking about picking this seat to go Democrat. It wasn't even close.
John M. Kennedy, Jr. (Inc.; R) def. Errol Toulon, Jr. (D) - 12th Legislative District
John Kennedy won with the largest percentage of the vote, 75%, outside of Schneiderman who ran unopposed. John is the BEST Legislator in the County. He deserved to win as big as he did. He has done more for his constituents than any other Legislator. He is not scared to take on Steve Levy, despite his political bullying. As John asked me to do after reading my predictions, John's wife and legislative aide, Leslie, is an incredible woman and a huge asset to the people of Suffolk County. Together, they have done an amazing job and I have no doubt they will continue to do so. Congrats John!
Steve Stern (Inc.; D) def. William Matthew Groh (R) - 16th Legislative District
This race surprised me with how close it was. Although William did not win, this is another message sent to Democratic incumbents. Democrats cannot fall asleep at the helm, because the Republicans are on their way back!
Thoughts:
Although the Republicans did not take control of the Legislature as they did in Nassau, they certainly sent a message. Republicans swept in Smithtown and won big in most of the other town races. This was a successful day for Republicans and it will be good all of Suffolk County. Less government, less spending, lower taxes, and strong public safety initiatives will be seen and the entire county will be better off for it. This is a big day for all Republicans. The voters sent a message to the Democrats that they will not put up with their false promises, and government control and regulation of the private sector. I expect this to translate into huge wins in the state and federal races in 2010, and hopefully a new President in 2012.
