It is easy to cast stones. It is also easy to say or do anything to win an election. Problem now is exactly what Beautiful Downtown Riverhead so expertly elaborated. Those I.O.U.'s are going to cost a ton of money. If the Republicans are casting themselves as the fiscal conservatives, there is going to be a huge disconnect with waht they say and what they do. Remember, supervisor has to run in a very short 2 years. There will be one Republican town board seat up in 2 years, as well. That's literally just around the corner.

The big question is whether the Democrats in Riverhead will remain as disfunctional as they appeared this year or will they finally get their act together and start running candidates who can actually win elections. If they don't, Riverhead is in big trouble. The Republicans now have the massive task of proving to Riverhead voters they were right to vote them in.

Anyone can tell you the voters will turn on you quick in Riverhead if they decide they don't like what the supervisor and the town board is doing. Sometimes it doesn't even have to do with actions as it does with personna. The rumor mill is extremely strong in Riverhead and people are very vocal about who they like and/or dislike. There is a long history of elected officials getting voted out based soley on how they interact with the public.

Riverhead was handed what should have been a virtual goldmine at EPCAL. It has turned out to be a millstone around the town's neck because it has been almost impossible to gain any consensus on what would benefit the town. Also, benefit is a very subjective concept. What I consider a benefit, my voting neighbor may not. Mr. Suffolk is 100% correct in saying that the Riverhead Democrats need better strategists and I believe they need to select better candidates.

However, the old expression applies: Be careful what you pray for, you may just get it. The Republicans now control the town board 100%. Their campaign was based largely on a need for change. It was also based on criticisms of Phil and other board members. Now is the hard part. Putting your money where your mouth is.

As I said before, voters in Riverhead will turn on elected officials in a heart beat. I know it is not right but it could be for how one of them greets a voter in the deli. I know Republicans like to say they will run government like a business. The problem with that analogy is that a business leader does not need to get elected or reelected. He/she does not have to concern themselves with being liked by the people who vote. They just have to get results like you do with your business. On the other hand, issues come and go with the wind. What is hot today is cold tomorrow. What made you popular today makes a villian to voters tomorrow.

Let the fickle winds blow and let's see just how effective the new town board is in appeasing Riverhead voters. 2 years is not that far away.
