I just can't believe that the Conservative Party finally came around to endorsing Thiele in recent years. What were they thinking? Say what you want about Pat Curcio. He knew Fred for what he really is.

Fred Thiele now a Democrat? What's new about that? |

I have been hearing rumblings from some of you about a big "blockbuster" breaking political news development. Is the Thiele announcement is that he
now officially a "Dem" the story you've been hinting at P-64? Because if it is, it is not really news, at all. All of us who have been
following "Flip Flop" Fred have known he is a Democrat for years. That is why I used to laugh my butt off when Tim Bishop described his curious
friendship with Thiele as a great example of his ability to "reach across the aisle."

He won't run against Sen LaValle, he will wait his turn.

I think the story is slightly bigger than that.

The story about Fred or something else Mr S?

and I believe he is right. There is a lot more behind this than we all know (except Mr. S.).
I am going to the 3rd Party Club meeting tonight, so this might be the "buzz." The Republicans have always been uneasy with Fred who they've called a Democrat for years. He most recently decided to introduce his own legislation to legalize same sex marriage. I had some fun with Eddy Walsh over that. Walsh and I had a shouting match a few years ago when he suddenly decided that Thiele was a "born again" Conservative and endorsed him over Tree Wolf West. Before that, the Conservatives had routinely refused to endorse Thiele who they knew was no true conservative. The irony is that the Conservative Party endorsed Thiele over Tree Wolf West who is 10 times more conservative in certain ways than Thiele. In fact, I really can't find Thiele conservative credentials in anything except for his support for the death penalty. I think you may be onto something about trying to succeed LaValle. Problem is that I think that he could make a much better case for the state senate as a Republican. Long Island has been screwed since the Dems took over the state senate. I personally think the Republicans have a great shot of retaking the state senate next year for that very reason. The other problem Thiele has is that no one likes him on the North Fork. He may have some support in Brookhaven, but no more than Marc Alessi. It has to be way more than that. Who knows, maybe the true story will slowly start to emerge? |

It's probably an "above the fold" front page type thing. Well, at least locally. Let the papers spill it.

What's new about coming out to the podium and announcing that you are thinking about switching?
Let's see. As 'republican-lite' as Fred was, he still, 'in principle' was a Republican in name on the side of Republicans. Voters that are republican, conservative or libertarian believe in party values and philosphies. The voters at the polls who believe in the core principles of the party, voted for Fred and implicitly expected Fred to conduct himself in Albany as a Republican. By publicly confessing to his identity crisis, Fred has irreversibly crossed the line. The line of trust. The line of principles, the line of core values. Anguishing over the dilemma over choosing the chicken or the steak is acceptable. But could a sailor announce that he was "considering" mutiny? Could a soldier on the front lines announce that he was thinking of switching sides? Could you announce to your family that you are "considering" committing suicide? Whether Fred switches or not he has has officially confirmed that he no longer knows what he should stand for. He has confirmed a broken moral compass and can no longer be trusted. The sooner the Republican party recognizes this immutable fact, the sooner we can elect a new public servant who will represent the people faithfully. |
