I'm just wondering if these two eateries were encouraged to leave Main Street, for political reasons. I don't see why the landlords would increase rent
considering the places are empty now.

Lindsay and Dianne from the cofee shop are some of the nicest people around. They are running into hurdles from the Health Dept to open at the Best Western
Hotel (?) at 25 and the LIE. I think they just weren't getting the foot traffic required at the old location.

I have a feeling that a supermarket would get bogged down with such red tape it would end up being too small to compete with the big stores on the highway.
UNLESS it were something unique, like a Whole Foods.

Real People Don't Shop At Whole Foods
|
But they do shop at the local IGA. . . I am always surprised when people try to make this 'Riverhampton', whether it's Whole Foods, or some other chi chi retailer. The fact of the
matter is that 61,000 working class people live within five miles of Main Street, Riverhead. We would all be better off if we accepted that fact and catered to
them.

Mr Suffolk |

The fact of the matter is, there's no way a store as big as Stop and Shop could afford to be there, so anything inferior will fail. Unless it has a niche.
Whole Foods isn't bad. Maybe Meat Farms, then. But certainly not something like Compare Foods.

It ain't Riverhampton | ||
|
The strength of Riverhead is that it is NOT a Hampton. Yeah. That's right. It ain't a Hampton. Think about this one, BDR and Mr. Suffolk. . .how many
people shop at the organic store in Hampton Bays ? How about the existing one on Main Street in Riverhead ? They are the definition of niche marketing. And
while there's nothing wrong with it, Riverhead does not lend itself to that kind of specialty store. Maybe you like statistics. The average household
incomes in Riverhead and Southampton Towns aren't that far apart, in the grand scheme of things: latest figures I have are $ 49,000 in Riverhead and $
63,000 in Southampton. And that takes into account the "wealthy" areas of Southampton Town.
61,000 people live year round within five miles of Riverhead. That's a lot of people who may not want to be forced into fighting with traffic on Route 58. They may just be inclined to go into a smaller grocery store to do their shopping and not have to deal with everyone and their brother on Old Country Road. But if we'll never know unless someone tries it. And I suspect they would be very successful. And as far as the trucks and parking are concerned: give it a rest. Stop already with the same old dull excuses. Trucks were delivering goods to Main Street, Riverhead for years and somehow everyone survived. We should live so long and be so lucky to have a parking problem. . .I don't know about you, but I would dance in the street the day we were so crowded with stores and commerce that we had a parking problem. Hell, I'd even dance with you BDR ! |

I NEVER KNEW YOU FELT THAT WAY BENITO....LOL. WELL WE HAD A GLATT KOSHER GROCERY STORE. THAT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS. YEAH, DONNA THOUGHT ALL THE ORTHODOX JEWS
FROM THE LAND OF THE WIZARD OF WESTHAMPTON WOULD CARRY HER THROUGH. BUT... WE HAVE WRIV IS THAT A NICHE MARKET????? SO HOW ABOUT THIS BENITO "THE
RIGHTEOUS". MR. SUFFOLK DON'T LIKE COMPARE FOODS. HOW'S ABOUT SUPERMERCADO OR EL SUPER? THAT'S NICHE CAN YOU GO WITH THAT SUFFOLK? NOW COME AT

Niche market ? | ||
|
If the Riverhead Town Board were smart (and some would say that is a very BIG 'if'). . .they'd approve an eruv from Temple Israel down Ostrander
Avenue to Main Street west to Osborne Avenue.
And they would do it NOW. They could put the black markers on the existing light poles along the street, no fuss. . .no bother. Although I do agree with you about Donna's kosher grocery store: too limited in its appeal. . .much like Mr. Suffolk's chain store of the day. Do we really need another chain store in Riverhead ? I think not. Besides, what we really need besides a mass appeal grocery store is an Italian specialty store. But you knew that. By the way, BDR, if we had that parking problem. . .I would definitely dance with you in the middle of Main Street. |
|||
Mr Suffolk |
|||

Why not a whole, small mall downtown, sort of like the Sun Vet Mall, which has a grocery store?
You don't think, though, a grocery store at the nexus of East and West Main would get kind of run down fast? People peeing in the aisles, stealing baby formula and such? A lot of Southampton Town people actually go to KK, I learned during politicking outside there. It's pretty easy access.

It seems to me.. | ||
|
That the only business's' that have stayed the test of time are restaurants on Main St. Now when I was younger (not that I AM OLD), but I remember
Woolworth had a place to eat and shop. The health food store had a small cafe at one time but some local jerk complained and shut that down as well. It appears
that he who whines the loudest get his way in Riverhead. BDR survived, but I believe he is not here for the long haul as well, retirement and points north and
east are lookin better everyday. I would love to see a town board just make Main St Riverhead a nice place to visit, to shop and enjoy. Who is really
benefiting from empty buildings?
C'mon guys work towards a common goal that will make you be remembered for a good thing not a scandalous one. |

THE REALITY | ||
|
THE TOWN BOARD...WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO? THESE BOYZ HAVE THEIR HANDS FULL JUST MAKING PAYROLL. GRANTS...LOL WHO TOOK THE GRANTS.
THE REALITY IS THE AREA IS NOW LATINO. MAIN STREET WILL CHANGE TO BUSINESS THAT CATER TO THIS COMMUNITY. POLITICIANS WILL JUMP ON THIS BANDWAGON. BEING COMPASSIONATE AND CARING BECAUSE IT WILL BE POLITICALLY CORRECT. THIS IS NOT A CONCEPT...THIS HAS HAPPENED. WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE HOW THE NEW DEVELOPMENT THAT WILL HAPPEN, NOT JUST ELECTION TIME POLITICAL BULLSH!T MELDS WITH THE LATINO COMMUNITY. NOW US OLD SCHOOL MULTI GENERATIONAL BUSINESSES HAVE THE GOOD FORTUNE THAT OUR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS PURCHASED THE BUILDINGS YEARS AGO. WE CAN SURVIVE BUT THERE IS NO GRAVY ON THE PLATE. What about Greenport?
|
Greenport turned themselves around. I was there this week, sidewalks full, buildings full. It is that we need a mayor? They have the waterfront, so do we. They
have a few small shops, ditto, I have to say greed and stupidity, thickheaded's and bull have kept Downtown Riverhead from rising from the ashes.

The Spanish have landed...
|
Okay...Jerry is back...then so am I. Yes, the spanish have landed with a hard thump too. The
patrons of the old board walk can be found in doorways, alleys, and storefronts all night long 24/7. They even took the liberty to treat all the building owners in the town to graffiti three weekends ago. What a beautiful site...they painted M13 Gang all over the town...do you think they're trying to tell us something? Here's the kicker...this is where the gold coin gets made...the town sends out a building inspector who writes tickets for all the building owners! Yes Jerry is right...the politician's will sympathize with these people. Also, there is an established eruv in town...no need for a new one. Three Card Monte has spoken. |
