I just don't see how the GOP can keep a majority unless they really change the way they campaign, develop a theme, etc.

I agree Mr. Suffolk, but the GOP has placed themselves in quite a predicament. The spent the entire 2008 beating the crap out of BXF and acting as though they
had some type of mandate to reform town government that they clearly did not. They then spent the entire special election campaign talking about how
bi-partisan they are and how ALL THE PROBLEMS from 2008 were due to Brian Foley and not them. The public saw right through this ruse and elected Lesko who
vowed to reach across party lines.
They depended on the short memories of the public and figured they could do as they please in 2008 and then play nice in 2009 just in time for Election Day. But that plan didn't work and they are stuck with a decision to make. Do they: 1) Stop the BS and place nice with Lesko, which makes him look good and assures he gets re-elected and also helps the democratic candidates who will be part of the "Lesko Team" come election day; or 2) Continue business as usual for the local GOP and fight fight fight. Something the public is clearly sick of and has indicated it will no longer tolerate. The 2008 chickens have come home to roost for the Brookhaven GOP. This is going to be a tricky play for them. What's their next move???? |

I see it less as a problem with message (not that the message you describe sounds all that super), but brand, to use a marketing term.
Since the early 2000s, the BH Dems, more than any other town party organization in Suffolk, have created a professional brand. Their signs have a certain, consistent look. Their message seems vetted. They don't say too much or too little. They are reined in and to-the-point. The GOP just doesn't come off as a cool place to be right now. What does it mean to be a GOPer in BH? Does anyone know? All the GOP signs look different and are placed with no rhyme or reason. The ads look inferior. The average voter BARELY thinks about their vote. Image means a lot. That said, perhaps the Dems have a weakness that could be exploited? But I don't think they can be beaten at their own game in BHT without serious thought. I'm not giving away free advice.

This may become the battle royal district against the weak Romaine for town board majority!

The majority has a major weakness being there was so much infighting within, and the public saw too much of what went on in the past year and a half on channel
18. That being said, coming from the outside, from someone who is getting more involved on a local level, the people are not happy with the gop right now. The
backstabbing and finger pointing and not being able to take responsibilty for the job they currently hold, put them at a dissadvantage when asked publicly.
Most people read and post much more that just here....and there is alot of bad feelings out there on the majority's side right now from losing....everyone is out to "get" the other guy/girl, and there is alot of name calling going on too. It's going to get pretty ugly. |
