Terri, While it may seem ideal if average people stood up and became activists, it's just not going to happen. It never has happened before. Not even in the Colonial Days. Only a third of people called themselves Patriots then. Activists have always been a tiny minority. I had been on the ground a lot the past decade, but this year I purposely took a step back to get the perspective of an average voter. Politics64 took some long shots on his predictions. He picked Eddington where everyone said he could not win. He deserves credit for that one. All his other picks, Republicans and Democrats won with the exception of the still contested Beedenbender and the Islip nightmare that nobody could have predicted how low that Democratic turnout was going to be. Still, even Derek Jeter strikes out!

Mr. Suffolk, I disagree; I think it's less "mood" than the fact that our culture is designed to turn out passive and compliant workers, not good citizens. Our social and educational systems do not reward critical thinking and challenging authority. Hell, we haven't even taught critical thinking in our schools since the '70's!

My feeling is this -- candidates are silly if they think that their "issues," debates, etc., win elections. It's more about some larger, ambiguous "mood" of the average voter.

I commend you for hitting the Beedenbender defeat nail square on the head. While it is fair to give me an Alcus dig you could be equally fair with a Jack Eddington boost because I was the only board member predicting he would be re-elected.
